- Remember the layering effect. Layer heavier draperies with light or sheer panels to add visual interest and provide for different levels of lighting. Alternately, layer fabric drapes with more streamlined roman shades.
- Go for color. Use draperies as another opportunity to develop the color scheme of a room. Choose saturated colors in fabrics and patterns that coordinate with the room's other upholstery
- Choose quality fabrics. For high drama draperies, choose fabrics such as silk or satin. Choose fabrics that are a bit heavier and that are lined for double protection against sun and cold.
- Add impact at the top. Curtain rods or valences can be striking design elements when used correctly. Look for curtain rods with beautiful metals or unique shapes. Dramatic valences with intricate pleats or folds are a great way to add additional texture to your window design.
