5 Tips for Organizing Your Kitchen Desk Area

A kitchen desk area, small though it may be, can quickly become the nerve center of a home. Mail, to-do lists, homework, calendars-- they all come together in this one area. Thus, it is imperative that your kitchen desk area is neat and well-organized.

Check out these five tips for taming the chaos and organizing your kitchen desk area.

1. kitchen desk areaUse bulletin boards to control paper clutter

Bulletin boards are a great way to corral invitations, to-do lists, and quick reminders. If possible, use multiple bulletin boards to designate a space for each family member, or for different categories of information.

To make bulletin boards more decorative, frame them in a frame that matches your overall kitchen design. Use pretty glass pushpins to attach items. Where this is space, pin a family photo or a favorite quote. (Photo: bhg.com)

2. Use the cubby system

Label cubbies or baskets to provide a home for the various items that collect in your kitchen desk area. Have different baskets for bills, personal letters, school papers, and work papers.

Lidded containers keep clutter from getting out of control. Even if you have a lot of paper, it looks neat and clean when contained within a pretty lidded basket. Make sure to the label the container so that everyone in your family knows what goes where.

4. Anticipate your family's needs

Stock a drawer or two with common office supplies- scissors, tape, paper, envelopes, stamps, pens, pencils, etc. Use drawer dividers to keep everything organized. Pencils and pens can be stored in a pretty cup or vase on the desktop. (Photo: bhg.com)

5. Add pretty touches

Flowers, vintage chairs, framed pictures, and small art prints are all great ways to add unique design touches to your kitchen desk area.
